Hosting racing, slalom, and GS competitions during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, Shiga Kogen offers some of the finest on-piste experiences that few ski resorts in Japan can match. Whether you want to slash through the snow and compete with your friends to see who can achieve the highest angle, or you want to focus on your form and take your technique to the next level, Shiga Kogen has just the right runs for you! By Japanese standards this makes Nozawa Onsen one the largest resorts in the country, ideally-suited to snowboarders and skiers who love its powder and lively village which offers plenty of dining and fun at night. The runs at Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort are not designed with competition in mind; consequently, they feel more organic and full of unique characteristics. Explore its berms and trees, or find a wide, flat area and practice that one snowboard trick you’ve always wanted to nail. Accommodation ranges from high-end to mid-range ‘ryokan’ (traditional guesthouses), Western-style hotels, budget ski lodges and an increasing number of luxury options including self-contained chalets.Ryuoo and Kijimadaira Accommodation & Ski PackageLocated around an hour from Nagano Station, Kita Shiga Kogen and Kijimadaira are one of the nearest and most accessible ski areas from Nagano City. Almost unknown to international visitors and most certainly overlooked, the four resorts in the area attract few foreign visitors but remain very popular with locals, who come each winter to enjoy great snow conditions.Karuizawa Accommodation & Ski PackageLocated just under 1.5 hours from Tokyo Station via the Hokuriku Shinkansen, The Karuizawa Prince Snow Resort – also referred to as the ‘Karuizawa Ski Resort’ – is perhaps the easiest to access and to enjoy ski resort directly from Tokyo. The Karuizawa Prince Snow Resort is a small all-rounder resort catering to all levels with around 30ha of mixed terrain across 16 trails, with a breakdown of 50% beginner runs with 25% of intermediate and advanced runs respectively, making it the perfect place to teach newcomers, while still allowing for some harder runs for those that are experienced skier and boarders. Open all the way from the start of November with artificial snow, the true powder experience starts from late December and lasts all the way to the end of March. The peak of the resort lies at 1,155 meters with the base lifts at 940 meters, making for a maximum descent of 215 meters with excellent views of Mt. Asama along the way.Shiga Kogen Spring Ski Package with AccommodationSitting between 1330 to 2307 metres above sea level, Shiga is not only substantially higher than any other resort but thanks to its inland location, it also enjoys Nagano’s most reliable snowfall.
